Who’s your favorite author?

When we find a great author, we naturally want to read more of their work.

Those of you who are avid readers know how this goes. You read a great book by a recommended author, and you love it! What’s the next thing you do?  Yep, you find out if they have other books, and you start working your way through them. When a writer can connect with the reader on some level, there is typically an element of truth, hope, or understanding that the reader experiences. This connection is much of why a reader gravitates to a particular author.

It isn’t uncommon for an individual I’m coaching to tell me how shocked they are by their newfound love for the Word, the Bible, and/or devotionals. It never fails—as they start to connect with God and look to His Word on a deeper level, they begin to gravitate to Him more. Many folks have tried to read the Bible but then found it didn’t make much sense, didn’t keep their attention, or simply left them defeated.

Today I encourage you to get that great book out! Working on your connection to God will be what draws you to the Word. There are so many ways to develop a relationship with God, and reading the Bible is one of them. However, we are all different. What works for one doesn’t work for the next—and that is okay! Try learning the Word through devotionals, blogs, podcasts, church, and good Christian friends. However, I want you to pay attention to how and when you find yourself really connecting to an idea … this is God communicating with you! If your connection to His words comes through music, then start there. If it comes as you read blogs that trigger thoughts or insight, start there.

Just start reading or listening to little snippets and think on them. Take one verse and call on God for insight. Pray on the verse and how it relates to your life. I just added a button to my Free Resources page to share some of my favorite tools for infusing God and His Word into our lives. There are Bible-reading and Word-seeking tips for beginners as well as for those who are well-seasoned. Click HERE to check it out (Bible Tips is on the bottom of the Free Resources page.) Once you get started and find that connection, your desire for more of God will not cease.

For this reason also, since the day we heard of it, we have not ceased to pray for you and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, Colossians 1:9

My only warning is to recognize that the Holy Bible is the only place of assured truth. Blogs, done by laypeople like myself, can get off at times. Preachers, podcasters, and Internet searches can mislead. Stick to reputable sites. There are so many to choose from. If you are just starting to get into the Word, start with preachers who are easy to listen to. There are many wonderful, deep preaching pastors as well. If you want some material to help you along the way, I included a little of both in my free download. The point is: Just follow any nudge to learn. The more you read the Bible, the more you will love the author!
