Taking Time to Be You

Take Time to Be You

Be yourself but still own your place as God’s child. We are here in this world with free will, able to enjoy and use it. But do we? Do we use it as we please? And is using it how we please also pleasing to God?

I love to do little things that make my day special. I love knowing that every Friday night, Jeff and I will be going on a date. I can dream about it all throughout the day. There is something wonderful about going to the coffeehouse with a stack of work that breaks up my day and puts a spring in my step. Each morning I tidy up the house and light my scented candles with my cup of coffee in hand, while Pandora plays Brandon Heath and Lauren Daigle just loudly enough to sign along to. And there isn’t much better than doing my Bible study outside on a beautiful day. These things seem minor, but they are the little things that I have learned make me me.

It is important to stop and think about who you really are and how you function best, and then to be in tune enough to listen to that. Of course, we want to have healthy routines that we know are also pleasing to God, and that is just what today’s post is all about.

God made you unique. He handcrafted you. There are certain things, many of which do not cost a dime, that can truly help grow and define you into your best. Here is a little guide to consider how much time you are investing in rooting Y.O.U. for good growth and living!

Y=YOURSELF. Being by yourself does not mean being lonely. Yourself can be you alone … or you and God. You have free will, but as you invite God into your life, you no longer are stuck here trying to navigate on your own. This post talks a lot about being you, but first I warn—never think “yourself” means “alone.” Always partner with God. I feel so strongly about it that it is becoming my life’s work. As you let God in, you become one with Him and “yourself” becomes you and Him. OWN THAT!

O=OWN. Own who you are, and hopefully whose you are. This is owning the understanding that you do not have to be like everyone else. You don’t HAVE to rise early or stay up late. You don’t have to vacation where everyone else does, eat the same foods, wear the same clothes, or even soak up God’s word just as your wise grandmother did. You have to know that you were handcrafted by the Almighty, and you are wonderful! You have to know that God knows you better than you know you—and He still loves you! Have a desire to get to know who He created you to be, and work to make it pleasing to Him.

For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. Psalm 139:13-16

U=UPWARD. Always look up as you do your best, living this fragile, free-willed life. You are His, and He wants to be yours. There is this strange place of complete love and submission mixed with a fiercely independent will to live under the authority of God and all His glory, that way that brings about true greatness.

You can still be you when being of God. Embrace that God made you unique and lovely. You have free will to do as you please. Live partnered with Him.
