Sore Today… Means Strong Tomorrow

Sore today means strong tomorrow. Many who work out want to know they are going to get results and being tender after a workout is one way to be reassured of physical change upon the horizon. If you spend an hour working out and your heart rate doesn’t rise, you feel like a spring chick when you are done, and you have not one sore muscle…you might feel like that hour was a complete waste.

Why do you suppose we resist the pain of emotional growth? While we almost welcome pain with a new workout-reassuring ourselves of muscle transformation, we shy away from the pain we feel in the heart, mind, and soul as we grow and transform through our trials.

I like this analogy because it helps shed a little light on this commonly misunderstood verse:

Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. Romans 5:3-8

It breaks my heart to see someone live in the pain of growth. But today’s blog is meant to encourage us to hang on through our suffering, to trust, and rely on the fact that there will be growth. The pain will ease and we will transform.

Today I see the pain in my suffering with a bit more insight. It isn’t so much that we want the suffering…it is the result we want- so we persevere!
