Peace First

Peace

… they must seek peace and pursue it. 1 Peter 3:11 (NIV)

Too often I find myself working very hard to do or accomplish what needs to be done … in order to what? Allow me the privilege of feeling at peace? But that is such backward thinking. I know. Yet it is a trap I fall prey to quite easily if I am not careful. What helps me find peace regardless of pressures is the knowledge that it isn’t ME who will bring the peace! Thank goodness, because most likely I am the reason there is a lack of peace to begin with.

When we feel anxiety or stress, that is when we need to call in reinforcements. Don’t forget, and do this as often as you need to. Call on God and the Holy Spirit for PEACE. Not for help with your to-do list alone, but for the peace you need in order to finish your to-do list. Not for your relationships to unravel, but for peace to keep the disposition you need for your relationships to flourish. And not for your pressures to relinquish, but rather for the peace you need so you can loosen your grip on the very pressures that are weighing you down. Ask for P-E-A-C-E first.

John 14:26-28 is a favorite part of our history, where Jesus shares with us that even though he would be leaving us, we would be gifted our constant companion: the Holy Spirit. Through the Holy Spirit we can receive peace whenever we need it. And when we do this, I believe things will truly begin to fall into place.

But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. You heard me say, “I am going away and I am coming back to you.” If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. John 14:26-28 (NIV)
