AWARENESS OR PRESENCE

AWARENESS OR PRESENCE?
Do you ever have times when you just feel like you are going through the motions? Where life isn’t bad, and it really isn’t great either. If you’d have asked me prior to this summer I would have said…”Self-awareness is the key to not letting these flat, almost empty, seasons become a way of life.” Sure, we all have times when we aren’t as passionate about life as we once were but I don’t think God really wants to live in that place. So once we realize it, we need to what… Snap out of it?
For a couple weeks now I’d been in one of these places. Not bad, and also not great. I could feel it and I prayed about it. Awareness… I’m always saying is so important. But, the thing was I had loads of awareness over this dull place and I couldn’t put my finger on how to snap out of it. It wasn’t until I realized that the flat and benign way of living had more to do with a habit I had gotten into.
A few big projects this summer had kept me focused and persistent. They were projects that I felt confident God wanting me pursuing. So as obediently as I could I set out to accomplish. Here is where the clarity finally came.
Do you see all of the ‘I’s in the blog thus far?
In my pursuit to please God, I actually pulled away from him a bit. I got stuck in the daily grind and I was missing God. It makes me sad to even type this but it is true. My focus was so acutely on the task at hand, and not on the task Master (Our Great Father).
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.” Matthew 5:6
God is my focus and His work is my purpose. His presence in my work makes it fulfilling and wonderful. We can go about our days pushing or going through the motions even with great discipline and for the right cause. But we NEED to stay connected to God.
We may have great awareness as to how we are acting, working, and living. We may be acting kindly, living well and serving others in a way that is pleasing to God. But, when we lack the presence of the Holy Spirit in our days…in our work…in our lives…
It quickly becomes rather flat… and almost empty.
Today, let’s stop for a minute and think about how deeply we sit in the presence of our Father. Are we in a habit of quieting, for more reasons than today’s very popular… ‘self-awareness’.
Self-awareness is a beautiful thing, but not without HIS PRESENCE.
