How good are we at keeping our eyes open and an ear tuned in, to those around us?
I have a girlfriend and a sister-in-law who are so good about this. They are just tuned in. Whenever I find something admirable about another, my first thought is, ‘I would like to be more like that.’ The second thought is…’How?’ This is actually my New Year’s resolution, and in order to help me achieve it, I decided to try and figure out what these two women have in common.
The two traits they both share is, they are selfless and they both consider their surrounding as larger than their current space. I definitely get focussed in on the individual or space I am in, which I love in many respects. But that doesn’t mean I can not or should not be a little more aware of those around me.
Do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others. Philippians 2:4
Being more diligent about listening and looking to those God may be putting around me has been a wonderful blessing! I know much of this verse speaks about the importance of not being SELF-absorbed. Simply engaging in those with us, of course, is wonderful. But today, I am writing with a reminder for me to love those I am with and listen for those God wants me to welcome in.
Let’s widen our surroundings. Who could God be putting around you?
